I have had friends and acquaintances and family members that have taken a year to potty train their child. I have often wondered, "What are they doing wrong?" and "Why is this kid not getting this? The poor mom." You see, Ruth was potty trained at 23 months after one month of training. Kate was potty trained at 24 months after 4 months of potty training, where she really only had trouble with pee. Johnny was potty trained at 28 months after four months of potty training with results just like Kate. Adam was potty trained at 30 months after one month of potty training. Rachel was potty trained at 23 months after one month of potty training. She later peed her pants again for a month, but she never pooped her pants. I thought potty training was hard, but not impossible. I did not understand how a kid could be so resistant.
Now, Anya is almost 33 months and has absolutely refused to potty train. She will poop her pants, poop the floor, put on a diaper to poop, but she absolutely will not poop in the toilet. She will only pee int he toilet if I take her or tell her to go. She will not do this herself, and she is a lot older than all of her siblings were. I have realized that Anya is a "take a year to potty train child". I did not know that I had it so easy with my other 5 kids. (It is funny how when you make a judgement about some one else's parenting it comes back to you at some point. I have to stop doing that! or stop having more kids to find out!)
Given my difficult Anya, I have made a decision. I do not want to fight with her for a year about going to the bathroom. I do not want to clean up poop messes for a year. (I have a really hard time not yelling when I am cleaning up poop that has been smeared into the carpet.) So, I am quitting for a year. Next July, I will potty train both Anya and Joseph at the same time. (I really have no reason to believe that Joseph will not be more like his other 5 siblings.) That means I will have 3 kids in diapers. I have never had that before! But I have never had a "take a year to potty train child".

I've almost decided that one with Ada... but everytime I put her back in a diaper she decides that she's okay pooping in the toilet... so she asks for panties and I put them back on her... then she gets lazy again. hmmm...
Both my girls were a bit tricky to potty train. Amber was just plain pig-headed about it till SHE decided it was time. Jade just plain ol' didn't care. But I found out that a sticker chart, jelly beans, and small prizes given out after so many stickers was just the right motivation to make her care enough to get out of diapers. My strategy with Paisley will be to start her before she knows any better. We'll see how that works out.....
