Bragging About Grades
I have to brag about Kate right now. I actually don't like it when other mothers do this, but I am not actually talking to anyone so maybe it is okay. At least I am not telling everyone how many words my one year old (I actually don't have a one year old right now) can say or how early so and so started walking, or how my two year old knows the alphabet (she does not). So here goes--Kate got all A's her first quarter of fourth grade, and I am just so proud!!!!! Anyone who knows my family really well knows that Kate had a really hard time in first and second grade. She started first grade as a non reader and had a really hard time learning to read. Every day after school I sat down with Kate and had her read to me and we worked really hard and long for her to learn her weeks sight words. It was a lot of work!!! We did the same thing all through second grade, and at the end of second grade Kate was finally reading at grade level. Even now, Kate has to work a lot harder to learn her spelling and vocabulary words than either Ruth or Johnny. Because of this Kate has less free time than her siblings. I am so pleased that Kate is willing to work hard and her efforts have paid off.
So Funny!
Rachel just came up to me and asked for juice. I said no because she has already had two glasses of chocolate milk. So then she asked for hot cocoa. Again, I said no and gave her the same reason. I offered her a glass of water instead. Rachel whined and shouted no and then said, "Don't treat me like a baby!" I just about died laughing. Kids are awesome.

Kate's News Article
Last night Kate wrote a fake news article about alien cows. She titled it "Alien Cows, by Kate J. Robertson" I thought that the Kate J. Robertson was pretty funny because Kate is her nickname. She is really Kathryn, but she does not like the name Kathryn. (I think that has to do with a few Kathryn's she has met.)
In her article she stated that Alien cows are amphibians from Mars. I asked her if they were like frogs and she said no, they are like newts. She wrote: alien cows put out a very powerful bad gas. Ruth said that she should have said deadly gas. Kate agreed. (I thought, "What cute kids I have.") Kate wrote in her article, "They look this this." Then she drew a line to a picture she had drawn. Kate read her article to all of us at dinner time. She was so excited about her silly joke. Kate is a really fun kid to have around. She has a great sense of humor and jokes well with all of us.

Rachel's Prayers
Rachel is just 2 1/2, so naturally I help her with her prayers. Each night I tell Rachel what to say for her prayer and then she says it. Last night Rachel started something different and funny. Here is her prayer last night:
Me: Say Heavenly Father
Rachel: Heavenly Father
Me: Thank Thee for Jesus
Rachel: Thank Thee for Jesus
Me: Help me to be good
Rachel:Help me to be good
Me: In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
Rachel: Thank thee for Boy (Boy is our cat)
Me: Amen
Rachel: Boy
Me: Oh okay, Thank Thee for Boy
Rachel: Thank Thee for Boy
Me: In the name...
Rachel: and babies
Me: Okay, and babies
Rachel: And babies, and daddies
Me: and daddies
Rachel: and daddies
Me: in the name...
Rachel: and daddies and daddies and daddies
Me: and daddies and daddies, and daddies in the name...
Rachel: and daddies and daddies and daddies in the name of Jesus Christ amen.
I thought it was just adorable that Rachel had a list of her own things to be thankful for, and hilarious that she had me say them so she could say them before she was satisfied. She did the same thing with John tonight when he was having her say her prayers.
Dinner Conversation
Kate: Dad can you make a rule about turning people into Tuna Fish.
Dad: No, but we can make a rule about you can only turn people into good tasting fish like Salmon, and Shark.
Kate:Johnny said he is going to turn me into a Tuna Fish and I think there should be a rule about that. Also he is dabbling in magic, and I think that is bad, so you should make a rule against that too.
Dad: Actually, tuna is good if it is raw and fresh. So Johnny can turn you into tuna if it is fresh tuna. What do you think Diane?
Ruth: Octopus is good.
Mom: Naw, it is too chewy.
Dad: What about squid.
Mom: Yeah, squid is good.
Johnny to Kate: I am going to turn you into tuna that is all mushed up and has turned into poop.
Mom: Johnny do not say disgusting things, and be nice.
Ruth:Crab is good. I like crab.
Kate: Doing magic should be against the rules.

The Stuff That Is For the Bathroom Only
Okay, okay I know that this is totally disgusting and belongs only in the bathroom, but it is such a huge part of my life as a parent that I've made up my mind to write about it-- poop and what goes along with it. Almost everyday I have some disgusting story to tell John on this topic and he says, "Are you going to blog about it?" I always say, "no, it is too gross." But recently I have realized this is a huge part of my life right now. I certainly don't spend nearly as much time wiping up poop as I do making food and cleaning up after food or washing, folding, and putting away the laundry. But I suspect it gets the third spot in line especially when I add cleaning the bathrooms to that category. Ten years ago when I first began parenting I had a lot more time and I read a lot of parenting magazines. One article that has stood out in my mind was one written by a grumpy pediatrician about how parents obsess about their children's poop. After reading that, I immediately thought back to all of Ruth's diapers that I had wondered about. Then and there I decided to never bring the topic up with a doctor. But a few years and a million diapers later I thought back to the article and said, "Well of course we obsess. It is right there in our faces, and everyone knows not to feed a diapered child grapes or broccoli and few other things because you won't be able to change the next diaper without gagging."
Now here are few recent events that I have had to deal with on this topic and yes, this has all been in one week, AND I don't think that it has been an unusual week this way.
The morning after Adam got his glasses he came over while I was changing Anya and said, "I think that looks like oatmeal poop." Indeed it did, and now it had been said-- YUCK!!! He has continued this trend whenever he is at hand for a diaper change.
I put Rachel, who has been semi potty trained for about 6 months now into the bath tub. John was in our bedroom nearby changing Anya's diaper so I went and did some laundry. I came back with my arms full of Anya's folded laundry. John said, "Anya is a bit sore I think I will put her into the bathtub with Rachel." I said, "I let Rachel have a lot of water, I don't think Anya will be able to sit in the tub. I will check." I went into the bathroom with my arms still full of clean laundry and Rachel said, "Here Mom." She held out two big logs of poop. I screamed and Rachel began to cry. She placed the logs on the side of the bathtub (it was so disgusting). I put the laundry down and started unrolling a bunch of toilet paper. John asked what happened and I yelled, "She pooped in the bathtub." My amazing husband then said, "Let me take care of it." I said, "That is mean," but what I meant was that would be mean for me to make you do this all by yourself." So of course I had to explain myself. John affirmed that he was really willing to take this one. So I got him a number of plastic bags, cleaning solution and rags. Rachel was lucky. I would have spanked her. I spent the rest of the night thankful for my husband. The next night John, Ruth, Kate, Johnny, and Adam went to the movies in the dollar theater. After they left, I put Anya and Rachel in the bathtub and Anya pooped in the bath tub. So I went through the same routine as John did the night before. Drain the tub, rinse the kids, clean the tub, clean the kids, and then clean the tub one more time just in case their were unseen germs still on the kids when I cleaned them. (By the way, the night Rachel pooped in the tub was the same night that she choked really badly and puked on the table in Taco Bell. I was the only parent there for that, so I think that is why John took the poop mess.)
Walking through the store with Johnny, Adam, Rachel, and Anya, Adam said rather loudly, "Mom was that Johnny that passed gas?" I said, "No, he was just coughing." Johnny replied, "I did not pass gas." Adam said, "Was it you that passed gas, Mom?" I truthfully said, "No." I asked, "Was it you, Adam?" Adam yelled, "I did not pass gas it must have been Rachel." Rachel screamed and starting saying over and over, "I did not pass gas..." She was loud too. Johnny asked Adam, "Did you smell something bad?" Adam said, "No, I heard something," and then he said, "It must have been somebody walking by us." At the point the subject was closed expect for Rachel who was still chanting. And yes, people did look our way.
Well, that is my long tale for today, but rest assured this is the only entry I plan to write on this ever present disgusting topic.

The Circumstances Surrounding Ruth's Testimony
just remembered this funny thing that happened on Sunday, so my blog posts are going to be out of order. Here we go.
We currently have church at 8am because of construction that is going on in our building and so we cannot fit more than one ward in the building at a time. It is easy not to complain, though because we are done at 11am, and because the last ward has church from 2:30 to 5:30. Well, Sunday morning I woke up at 5:30 and thought, "Oh good, I can sleep for one more hour." The next thing I knew, it was 7:33. Luckily we had all bathed the night before, and when I said, "Oh no," John popped right out of bed too and said, "At least it is fast Sunday." We dressed everyone and combed everyone's hair as fast as we could. Ruth put dry cereal in baggies for the younger kids and we made it to church at 8:04. I went immediately to the mothers room to nurse Anya and even made it back in time for the sacrament. So I felt pretty good about the morning so far.
Ruth was about the third person to bare her testimony and she said, "I know the church is true, and I know that Heavenly Father loves me. This morning my parents did not wake up until 7:33..." the congregation laughed and John and I turned pretty red and laughed too, "...Heavenly Father helped us get to church because he loves us and wants us here..." I was pretty embarrassed, but I am so glad that Ruth has such a sweet testimony and understands that Heavenly Father indeed cares how her day goes.

Adam Gets Glasses
For about a year, I have wondered if Adam wasn't seeing well. Adam always watched the TV up very closely. When we told him to move back, he would say it was because he could not see. When I would ask Adam to find certain things in a picture he often would get it wrong. Adam also has been slower about learning to write his name and draw pictures. In fact, it took a lot of practice for Adam to be able to draw a circle just after he turned three a year ago. One year ago I took Adam to be tested for speech and other delays. They tested his eyes and hearing too. Adam came out fine and normal on everything and ahead in coordination and physical skills. For the eye test, they only tested to see if he had a lazy eye, or was cross eyed. Well, all this year, I still wondered about his eyes. So, when I needed to replace my contact lenses I set up an appointment for John (The Dad) and Adam too. (By the way, there is a federal program that covers one eye exam for all children under four for optometrist's who sign up. So Adam's exam was free.) The doctor asked why I brought Adam in and I told her about his writing and TV watching and picture book looking. I did mention that he is our most coordinated child and that he never falls down too. Well, she tested him using pictures, like she would an older person with letters. When she was through she said that Adam could see fine far away, but that he is very far sighted. She said that she found him to be a +8 in both eyes. She also said that she saw no signs of a lazy eye or cross eyes. Then she said that she wanted to use the computer test to make sure her diagnosis was correct. She dilated his eyes and the computer came up with the same +8 in both eyes. She said that most kids who have such severe far sightedness have lazy eye or cross eyes. So it is odd that Adam does not, but it is still very good that he does not. After John and I had our exams we picked out glasses for Adam and John and ordered my contact lenses. They said it would be 7 to 1o days before Adam's glasses were ready. On Monday, I called, after it had been 12 days, and they were ready. When the guy was giving Adam his glasses, he said that Adam could look across the street and see perfectly, but that he couldn't see much for 20 to 30 feet in front of him. I was astonished. I did not realize my little boy has been so blind. Today, I spent some time looking up farsightedness on the internet so I could get a better idea of what Adam's eye sight has been like. I felt astonished. I read a few things from other parents, but most kids were not close to as bad as Adam is, and all other kids that I read about had lazy eyes as well as severe farsightedness. The eye doctor wanted to see Adam after six weeks of his wearing glasses to see how his eyes are adjusting. I will go in with a lot of questions this time. At the same time, a lot questions about Adam have been answered and some things really have surprised me. I now know why Adam didn't watch TV until he was 2 years and 8 months, or why he didn't ever want to draw and why his letters are so horribly scrawly. I actually had several people tell me that Adam must have ADHD. I have always rejected that because he will sit with me and read for an hour and has liked being read to since he was a year, and that he is really well behaved for his primary teachers. They even say that he is interested and answers questions. So I am glad to find out what his problem is, but I feel bad that he has spent nearly four years of his life nearly blind. I can't believe that Adam can draw circles and people, that he knows all of his shapes, and that he has been able to write and recognize his A and d in his name.
Adam has always been our most energetic wrestle you down and bounce all day kid. So glasses for this little guy seem more like a dare. After only a few hours with them Adam had bent the frame (luckily it bent back), and after less than 24 hours Adam has scratched his lenses. (The older kids keep trying them on too.) It is a good thing I bought the warranty.
The doctor said that it would take Adam about 2 weeks for his eyes to start focusing properly with his glasses. But already we can tell that Adam sees better. It has been much less of a battle to keep his glasses on than we thought it would. Adam has been excited about the straps on his car seat, himself in the mirror, some picture books, and a couple of dvd cases. I hope that he will be able to see 20/20 in both eyes now. The doctor didn't seem concerned, she even said that his eyes may improve some with the glasses. Poor little Adam. I am sure sorry he has gone so long being so blind.
Family Friendly Pizza
We bought a supreme pizza from the target deli for dinner after our Saturday yard work day. Then I took all of the vegetables and put them on basically one slice. That way, I got my vegetable pizza and the other 6 eaters of the family got their I only like meat pizza. It was perfect!!!!
Yummy
John's Birthday
We tried to trick John by getting him new pajama bottoms for his gift and putting his real present, an mp3 player inside the pockets. But the mp3 player slipped out of the pocket and into the wrapping-- oh well, at least John got what he wanted and pajama bottoms with no holes to boot.

The Play
Warning: You will not get this if you do not know The Lord of the Rings By. JRR Tolkein
I have been reading The Lord of the Rings to my 3 oldest children. We have really enjoyed these books as a family. Well, the kids have started to play The Lord of the Rings. Today on into tonight they had made a pretty big event of "The Lord of the Rings Play" as they call it. Ruth was the Lady Eowin, from Rohan, and Kate was the Elf, Arwin, Elrond's daughter and Aragorn's love. Johnny was Frodo the ring bearer. After dinner Adam wanted to play too. At first Adam was Gollum, because he was killing Frodo, but then Adam wanted to be on the good side. He has been sitting up while we read the books lately and asked if he could be Strider. The older kids said that Adam could only be an orc or Gollum. John and I thought that this was rather funny because when John was a kid the three oldest kids in his family always played Star Wars. John and his brother James were always either Luke or Hans Solo, and his sister, Mary was always Leah. If their sister Margaret, the fourth child like Adam, wanted to play, they would only let her play if she would be ChewBacca.
Well, to help the matter some, I went in and told the kids that I was SauraMom. Every one laughed at that. Then 2 year old Rachel started marching around the house chanting, "Sorry-mom, Sorry-mom, Sorry-mom." John was just in Dad heaven with the cuteness of his kids playing something that he loves and acting the same way he did as a child.

The Question
Everyday about 30 times a day Adam asks me, "How is your day, mammamia?" Mostly, I know that he is very sweetly trying to have a conversation with me, but after the tenth time in 2 hours, I just can't think of anything different to say. Yesterday I said, "Adam, you need a new question." He nodded and shouted, "How was your STUPID day MOM!??!!!"

About Rachel
Rachel gets eczema very badly on her for arms and on the back of her knees. I asked her pediatrician about this, after she still had it for 7 months. I was worried that it was the result of allergies to cats or milk or something. The doctor said that 90% of kids with this kind of rash do not have allergies. Since no one else in our immediate family has food allergies we decided to not test her at this time. The doctor told me to put thick globs of ucerin on the spots. I started to do that, and when I remembered to do so consistently her rash cleared up a lot. When I was not consistent about it, she would break out with a fresh rash.
Rachel has been really whiny since about a month before she turned 2. We thought it was the new baby or just being two. But it can be very frustrating to have a day when a child whines at you throughout the entire day. Ruth kept praying that the babies would not make things so hard for me. In the temple, last month, John prayed about what to do with Rachel's whining. He felt like we should be consistent about putting the cream on her rash. Since then John and I have been diligent in treating Rachel's rash, and she has not been fussy. She has also not been getting into things and destroying things so much. We are very thankful for a Heavenly Father who is willing to instruct us so specifically on how to care for our children.
Rachel can talk in complete sentences and her words are much clearer now. This makes life a lot easier for both Rachel and I. But it also means we get to enjoy some of the funny and ridiculous notions of a two year old. If anyone calls Rachel a girl, monkey, monster, princess, baby, etc., she immediately says, "I am not... I am Rae Rae." The fact that she calls herself Rae Rae is rather cute, because when she was born, I said that we were not going to shorten her name to "Rae." But Adam, who is only 17months older than Rachel called her Rae Rae from her birth. It kind of just stuck and now that is what she calls herself. However, she doesn't correct you if you call her Rachel.
About two weeks ago, Rachel was very messy!!!! She took two and often three baths each day. When she was finished eating she would squish her food together and paint the tray of her high chair. The last two weeks, that has changed drastically. Rachel has suddenly become a much neater eater. And now she gets upset if her clothes have food or water on them. Yesterday we had a lot of rain and Rachel would go out for a bit, and then come in and change her clothes. She has done the same thing today if she gets water on her shirt sleeves when she washes her hands. Last night at dinner I heard Rachel quietly saying, "Shoot, shoot, shoot, I got it on me." I think she will be graduating to the table with the family soon.

Good Mom, Too BAd (title by Kate)
Yesterday, I had to wash our floor during the day because I neglected to do it the night before. It is usually pretty hard to do this with the kids around. So, thinking of all the parenting books and talks on parenting I have read and heard, I got Rachel her own little bucket of water and a rag. All this time, I'm thinking, "Boy, I'm a good mom." So Rachel had her bucket and rag and I had mine and we started to wash the floor together. (I was still feeling pretty good at this point). Then Adam came in and grabbed the bucket from Rachel. Rachel started screaming, and tugging the bucket back. I told then to share the bucket. They did not. They kept screaming until they dumped out the entire bucket of water. I gave Adam a dry rag and told him to wipe up his spill, and then told Rachel to go to her room until I finished washing the floor. Then I sent Adam to Rachel's room too. I no longer felt like a good mom-- I felt like a dumb mom. Why did I not think to get two small buckets? I have to get 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 of everything else or have lots of fighting, grumpy kids.
Rachel at Dinner
Last night at dinner I was telling John that I wanted to put Rachel to bed early because she had been so fussy. Rachel immediately said, "I AM NOT FUSSY!!!! aAAAAAAAA."
