This Week at Our House # 32

Kate has some candy canes left over from Christmas. She was eating this one and talking and then suddenly it disappeared and she could not find it. This is where she found it.

I am deleting the above stuff. Kate is still not going to college. I am having to learn that my adult kids will make decisions that I do not agree with and I should not write about.

On a lighter note, Arwen and Josh both have their first loose teeth. Josh has one and it is not very lose, and Arwen has two and one is quite lose. On the first day Kate and John decided no college, I took Sam, Suzy, and Arwen to the beach and it happened to be the best beach day yet with very little wind, plenty of clouds to shade the sun, very warm, and nice water. Sam is 9 months and as fat as can be. He has been crawling up to all of the kids and kissing them on the mouth. Suzy sleeps with Ruth most nights. Sometimes she jumps on her for an hour first, but Ruth is fine letting Suzy into her bed.

Ruth wrote these little things up about Arwen:

Today I was telling Kate about these ugly mugs, and she asked me to describe them. I bluntly stated that they looked like "Christmas gone wrong." Arwen immediately jumped up and said "No! Christmas gone right!"

Then when playing dolls she had a baby doll and I had my American Girl doll. Arwen had her doll point to mine and speaking of a different baby doll said "It came from her." "What do you mean?" Again having her doll point at my doll's stomach, "It came from her." "You mean it's her baby." "Yes." Originally it was supposed to be older sister and baby.

Arwen:"Come take care of the unicorns and then they will have babies too."

Me: "Kate look my American Girl doll looks like Arwen."
Kate: "You're right!"
Arwen: "She looks like you too!"
Me: "She does?"
Arwen: "Uh Ruth, she looks like everybody."

Playing with Arwen and the unicorns when suddenly:
Arwen: "Shh! And the baby unicorn is hatching. First is it's horn.."
Me: "Wait. Hatching? From an egg."
Arwen: "Yes."
I am sure she got this from land before time

I'm with you on this Diane. She called me and told me. your siblings are upset...they regret not going to college right out of high school. I told her that President Munson stated all HS grads need to attend college. I told her if it was HER decision to wait for her mission as she stated, then waiting and doing all 4 college years together was good. I think John is not supporting his kids to make them independent and well adjusted into society so they can be happy and be of service to their community. Dad is upset that she will NOT get another scholarship again...they will turn her down since she is giving this one up. I hope you can get John to listen to you....love you so much......MOM

The thing is, Kate is going to bitterly regret not going to college right out of high school. Dad is seriously upset, because she will never get another scholarship. I tried to talk to Kate about it, but she pretty much hung up on me. Fact is President Hinckley and President Monson have said that women should get an education. Starting late, if she she starts at all, will put her way behind. Also, I know Kate wants to get married and have babies. How could she do this without getting out to date? There is no one in North Carolina. I from personal experience. Lastly, in this world you have to have a degree to get a good job. Homeschool is fabulous for high school and below, but you need a formal college education to have any type of decent job and respect in this life. No one will her seriously for doing "private" education. I love you, and I fully support your point of view on this. Amy, Amber, and I can tell her until we're blue in this face that she will regret this as we know from personal experience. This is all I am saying on this matter.

Whoa! I do not know your family dynamics, but I vehemently disagree with the sentiment that a person has to have a university (or college) degree to get a good job. Are you so biased that you look down on the trades? Including cosmetology, nursing, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics, etc.?? Our son is a certified Honda mechanic who at age 24 makes almost as much as his Dad who is a school teacher with a four year degree! What constitutes a good job? My idea of a good job is one that provides enough money to support your, and your family's, needs (not greeds), allows plenty of time for family relationships, and gives you the feeling that you're doing something worthwhile and contributing to society, even if in a small way. What is to prevent your daughter from moving away at the age of majority and pursuing her dreams on her own? College, while beneficial is your desired job requires a specific degree, is not the be all and end all of life. And while the prophets have urged women to become educated, not all education is gained in a classroom. Lastly, does your husband object to online college? I'm sorry for your disrupted family right now. That is not an easy thing to live with. Blessings to you, and may the Lord soften your husband's heart.

Maybe Kate should go talk to her bishop about this. We are so very sad. College was such a great joy and blessing for all of us.....John loved getting to go to college and moving on from High School too.

I'm sorry for this! Any fight in a family is miserable. I'll keep Kate in my prayers. I know everyone's path is different, I loved mine the way I did it and wouldn't change it.... but I know others that would. I personally LOVED college, LOVED serving a mission, LOVED working and have LOVED my married life as a wife and mom. I feel like every single thing that I've had in my life has made being a wife and mother more enriching. I know others that would have liked to have kids earlier, wanted to go to school earlier (my friend just got her associates and couldn't be happier), would have liked to serve missions if the age limit had been lower at the time.... etc.... my goal in life is to not regret the things I've chosen and to keep my eternal goal in the forefront. Love you! I hope things work out soon.

I am sorry. I bet your husband is scared of sending off his firstborn. It's okay if she gets a good education, and a good job. May God Bless more children to grow up to be Good Homesteaders, and have less Squatters!! Take Care.

I am so sad for Kate. How I loved college--and learned so much--not just intellectually but my life was enriched and my heart and soul expanded. At BYU, it's a complete education of both spiritual and intellectual--all truth learned together in one whole. I took 2 religion classes every semester--I took classes from and got to be a TA and RA for Joseph Fielding McConkie--a treasured association until he died in fall 2013. I ended up doing original research with professors at the church archives on Joseph Smith's presidential campaign. I had so many amazing experiences and opportunities, and learned and grew so much. It made me a much more complete person and certainly has made me a much better mom. I believe that is in part why President Hinckley stressed education for women. My mom's stay-at-home-mom neighbor growing up was president hinckley's sister, Sylvia. She had been the valedictorian at BYU, and she used that education to be a wonderful mother and influence and example to others--including my mom.

Hugs from afar. I am so sorry that you feel like you are not being taken seriously by your spouse and your daughter. Your words and advice as a covenant Mother are just as valuable as a Priesthood holder and Father and it is very problematic that your worries and concerns are not being given equal weight.
I hope for your daughters sake that she will at least seek some sort of trade school or beginnings of some kind of career. It sounds like she is even giving up a scholarship!
WOW!!
Even if she just wants to be a stay at home mother (a noble calling) everyone needs a back up plan that works! There are too many women that I know who end up having to support themselves due to circumstances out of their control. One option that I think is great that I wish I had pursued (I became a teacher instead) was nursing. Even as a stay at home mom you could fulfill a few shifts per month to keep up your licensure and training and then you would be prepared to make a decent living if needs be.
I will be praying for you and your family.

Oh my dear friend, I am so sorry you are having this conflict in your life. I know that you are hurting deeply. I do think time will heal this struggle. I will be praying for you all. I myself stayed at home and went to. BYU for my nursing degree. I have a major regret that I didn't leave home and go away to school. I think it is so valuable in preparing for marriage. It all worked out OK, but I would have loved the experience of living away from home. Of course, a mission will help that. However, the college experience away from home is a wonderful one.
I do hope John and you will work through all your feelings on this. Of course, this is a life experience that will pass and you will both have learned from the sad moments of this one.
I would really encourage Kate to do the Church's pathway program. I have a return missionary grandson that is doing that and he loves it. He did that first and is now applying for BYU- Idaho. We are praying he gets in because he really needs the social enviorment there.
You have such a short time with your sweet Ruth; enjoy the moments and just be your loving endearing self. Time, prayer, and love can soften your husbands heart. I'm sure he doesn't want all of his children to not have a college education. I'm sure that was a thought flung out in the heat of the battle. There may be some fear with the many scary things that are going on around us.
Sending prayers, loveing thoughts and hugs your way!
I did enjoy Ruth's sweet experiences with her little sister~
