Johnny's Lego Birthday

I have to admit, I was nervous! Johnny invited about 6 boys over for a late night birthday party. We have had girls over plenty, but this would be the first time I would allow a bunch of boys in the evening.

We sent out invitations last Sunday-- just little scraps printed in black and white. I hadn't prepared much and we needed to get the boys invited before everyone had other plans. The day before the invitations went out, I talked to Johnny about making the party lego-themed. Johnny hesitantly agreed. And John thought the idea a bad one- not enough legos, not long enough, etc. I said we could make a lego cake and have the boys do a tallest tower contest with legos. Those completed the plans.

Friday rolled around quickly. With homeschool in full swing, I hadn't given anymore attention to birthday party plans. We did school and chores in the morning as usual, and I took Johnny out to lunch and to buy some candy for the party. We arrived home after 3:30. The boys were coming at 6.

I began making the cake. Johnny asked the neighbor if he could borrow his Bionicle movie. Then Kate came to the rescue.

Kate got out a bunch of boxes that had not yet been shoved into the recycling bin, some scissors, tape, and some construction paper. She went to work creating a really great lego themed party. I made the cake, dinner, and cleaned up again and again and again.

5:45 rolled around and the boys started arriving. 6pm came and I finally had the food all ready. The boys started with the tallest tower contest. Next we had Johnny's spaghetti dinner. A few boys, complained that spaghetti is not party food, but it is Johnny's favorite and everyone ate a bunch. Present opening came next followed by the beating of the Kate-designed lego pinata. Then the boys competed in a free-for-all lego building conest judged by Ruth and Kate.  Next the boys jumped on the trampoline and later we had cake and ice cream. After a little more time outside in the dark on the tramp, the boys settled down to watch the Bionicle movie. The party ended with a SuperSmash Brothers competition on the wii. 10pm finally rolled around. Some parents came and by 10:20 I had Johnny walk the rest of the boys home.

The party was a huge success. Johnny had a ton fun and a very happy 11th birthday. And most importantly I survived a houseful of boys until after 10pm. Johnny will be allowed to have late night parties again!
