Happy Birthday Anya
Anya had her 9th birthday on Monday. It's hard to believe that this little baby is already 9. She is such a beautiful little girl with her light step, her long brown hair, and her large brown eyes. Anya has always been sweet and quiet and a little bit weepy. She loves to play with her siblings, but at times she just likes to play by herself. She loves, loves, loves Baby Sam and can make him smile bigger than anyone else. Anya is good and kind and usually very dependable. She is the middlest child in the family. She has five older siblings and five younger siblings and she fills that role perfectly.

This Week at Our House #1
- It was a quiet week. We really had nothing very important or interesting going on. John worked and we went on a date and that was about it.
- Ruth left on Wednesday morning, so we started school back up as soon as I got home from the airport. The kids got right back into the swing of things with ease, and I enjoyed being more scheduled.
- Ruth was supposed to fly back on Tuesday, but we noticed that I had really biffed it with booking her flight and we did not feel that her lay over was at all safe for an 18 year girl travelling alone. We paid the fee and sent her home the next morning instead. She got back up to BYUI the same time she would have. She just didn't have the opportunity to see her aunt and uncle and grandparents like we had planned. She started classes again on Thursday. She is changing things up a bit in her schedule and waiting for her financial aid to come through and everything. She has 2 new roommates that she seems quite happy with.
- Kate was sad to see Ruth go, but got right back into school and school work.
- Johnny is now preparing to take the ACT. We are considering graduating him a semester early since it is just homeschool and having him start BYUI online next winter. In essence it would still be homeschool, but it would make it so he could probably get 4 semesters of college in before his mission while not really changing anything. He is already doing math, history, english, and science from college text books. Our only hesitation is money since we will have a missionary out.
- Adam was excited for his first temple trip, but the Temple closed for the snow storm. We will have to reschedule for him. He has been doing family history everyday.
- Rachel was sad to see Ruth go. She has really gotten to love her two older sisters in the last year. I think it will be hard on her when Kate goes.
- Anya did well with school starting back up. She woke up early and got all of her independent work done before 10am. Her 9th birthday is tomorrow and she is really excited about that.
- Joseph heard me read the Agatha Christie book with Kate on Christmas day and since then he has been very interested in reading Agatha Christie. I think he is too young, so I got him some Encyclopedia Brown books. I hope he likes them.
- Josh did well getting back into a school schedule. He didn't seem to mind doing his work at all.
- I've kept Arwen with me and pretty scheduled and think that has been good for her.
- Susan was mad at Arwen for playing with her tea set, so she picked it up and threw it on the floor. One of the plates broke. She knew immediately that she had done the wrong thing, so she went straight upstairs and put herself to bed.
- Sam likes me to jump him. I jump him up and down and sometimes sing a little song to him. When the jumping stops he either lifts his arms or bends his knees because he wants more.

Various Responses to the Snow
Kate: "It actually happened. It's so pretty."
Johnny: "It's not even cold. Susan doesn't need a jacket."
Adam: the first one out and he wore his shorts, t-shirt, and gloves.
Rachel: all dressed up in a jacket and matching hat and gloves says, "Mom do I look good?"
Anya: stayed out the longest.
Joseph: went out came directly back in and said, "maybe I should wear a coat."
Josh: "What's a coat?"
Arwen: "Snow is food."
Susan: wouldn't go outside at first, came right back in, then went out again for a longer time and cried.
Me: "Close the door! The heat is on." X 1000
Most everyone else in Eastern North Carolina: 1.Hears weather report. 2.Cancels everything. 3.Stocks up on bread, milk, and apparently bananas and cucumbers.
And they built a snowman:

This Week at Our House #1 2017
- John did not work as much this week so he could spend some time with the family. But he still completed a project. We went to the beach, out to eat as a family, and had a lovely new years eve party. It was a good week.
- I planned and carried out the last beach trip for 2016. The temperature was only about 65, so we did not swim much, but we still had a lovely day. It was on the way home from the beach that John decided to take the whole family out for dinner/lunch. The kids were calm and quiet and so well behaved and I hardly believed they were all my kids. The sunset that we drove toward on the way home was the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. The colors were amazing. That was Tuesday. The rest of the week I spent at home reading or out driving with Ruth.
- With divine intervention, Ruth got her drivers licence early Friday morning. She was relieved and immediately lost her desire to drive. She needed to have her drivers licence to be qualified for a mission and that is all she wants it for.
- Kate lost her voice and cried in frustration because she could not talk.
- John still had Johnny working on calculus problems all week.
- Adam was one of only two family members to actually swim in the ocean.
- Rachel slept in until 10 or 11 every morning. She was unhappy when I woke her up for 9am church this morning.
- Anya did not comb her hair all week. Thank goodness for conditioner.
- Joseph was the second child to swim in the ocean. I made him wait a while before allowing him in the water. Then I spent the rest of the time saying, "I told you so."
- Joshua was freezing the moment he stepped out of the car at the beach, and spent the whole time at the beach wrapped in a blanket. If we were still in Utah, I doubt he would be thinking that 65 degrees is all that cold.
- Arwen got into John's razors, tired to shave, and cut her upper lip. I think she learned why I say not to play with dad's razors.
- Susan came into the bathroom while I was cleaning it. She slipped on the cleaner I had soaking on the floor. I did not know she was hurt. I was cleaning behind the toilet, so I just quickly moved her out of the bathroom and reminded her that she was not supposed to come in while I was cleaning. She went crying to Kate. Kate discovered Suzy's mouth was bleeding and brought her back to me. I told Kate to give her a wet wash cloth to suck on. That was the last I heard about it. Then this morning in church I noticed that she had a sore below her bottom lip and that her lip was poofy. I looked inside her mouth and it was torn up and swollen. Apparently, little Suzy had bit all the way through her lip when she fell. She had colored her mouth with an orange marker earlier in the day, so until that had faded, we couldn't see what exactly had happened to her.
- Sam is now smiling big cute baby smiles when we talk to him. We are hoping to get pictures of them soon. He is now 7 weeks. He sleeps 5 hours through the night, but he will only sleep in my bed and he likes to be held most of that time.

2016 Year Review
2016 was one of the worst years and one of the best years of my life.
2015 was a very hard year. John worked a contract job most of the year, but they had not paid us regularly. Most of the year, we did not have enough money to buy food. While John spent every Saturday the whole time he worked applying for other jobs, nothing came of it. By midyear, we knew we would need to sell our house. We sold it and had to leave Utah. Because no jobs came up, we had to move in with my parents. That was the hardest thing we had to experience as a family. The kids had to sleep on the floors and go to schools that were very different and very strict. We decided that because things had been so difficult we would rent a home for a week for Christmas. Once we got that settled and paid for, a kind family that was leaving North Carolina and moving to Utah offered to rent their house to us. We finally had a home to rent, our kids could choose to homeschool, and they would get their beds and toys and all of their clothes. We had every reason to expect that John would find a job in January or February. I was pregnant and expecting a new baby in May. By the end of December, we firmly believed that 2016 would bring us the blessings we had been seeking. And it did, but not the way we expected.
January 1, 2016 was our move in day. We left the beach house at 11am. We got to the rental at 1pm. I went with Ruth to buy stuff to clean the house and some food and paper dishes. By 3pm, I was sure that the pains I had been having that morning were meaningful. I was in labor and delivering a still born baby at 21 weeks. We had a baby boy and named him Christopher. That was the sad beginning of 2016.
After dealing with a difficult move, selling a house we loved, leaving schools we loved, and then losing a baby, I did not have enough energy to make new friends or be involved in anything outside the family. We had a quiet winter.
John spent hours everyday applying for work and I homeschooled the kids and that was it. The kids were happy and spent a lot of time playing outdoors. In this small house we spent more time together and grew closer as a family. I was blessed with another pregnancy just 6 to 7 weeks after the loss of Christopher.
By springtime, we were running out of money. I began applying for jobs too. Ruth had been applying for jobs all winter. She was supposed to be making money for college and instead she was usig her savings for soap and things for the family. Nothing came through. I think, Ruth, John, and I had maybe one interview each all spring. I was getting nervous. Our cash ran out in April and we had to start living on credit.
As the year continued to progress, I did not know what to do or even if we were going to end up homeless in a few months. I spent a lot of time praying. John had more faith. He never panicked and never once questioned the promptings from the Holy Ghost. He would always tell me not to worry. He reminded me that we had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would get a job.
On July 1st, I paid the last rent. All of our money and all of our credit was gone. We had nothing left and no where to go for help. After I paid the rent, I said a prayer. I told the Lord that we had been doing all we could, but that we had reached the end. We had nothing left. A half hour later, the Lord answered my prayer. John got an email asking him to call the place he had recently interviewed at. They wanted to hire him as a contractor. The job came and we would not need to move.
John started working July 12th. They told him that the first hour that they had advertised the position they had 40 applicants from all over the nation, but John was the only qualified candidate in Eastern North Carolina. I was glad to know that. We did not know there were so many people looking for jobs in the same field as John. It gave perspective to the last couple of years.
July was a hard month because we had no money. I cannot even describe our feelings when on August 1st, we had money deposited into our bank account.
At the end of August, John's grandfather died. He went out to Utah for the funeral. When John got home Ruth and I flew out to Utah so I could take her to BYUI.
At that point in time, Ruth heard that she got a pel grant that would cover her tuition and the rest of the money we owed for her housing. Before then, we did not know, but I told her not to sign any papers for loans. I would rather we stay very poor than Ruth take out a loan. After Ruth was at BYUI for a week, she found out that she had been awarded a full tuition scholarship. I am not sure how she missed that before. One usually knows before classes start. At that point Ruth had more than enough money to live on. In fact, she will have enough to pay for her medical expenses in preparation for her mission. In the end, it did not matter that Ruth couldn't get a job. Heavenly Father had found other ways to take care of her and us.
John's job continued to go well through the year. He is the only one working on improving and adding to their product and he is doing that quickly. So even though, John is only a contracted employee, he has job security.
In November, we gave birth to our second little boy in the same year. This time, we had a breathing, fat, healthy, full term little son.
2016 didn't turn out at all like I expected. It was a year of very difficult trials and immense blessings. It was a year of sorrow like I have never known and it was a year of joy like I had never known. It was a year of poverty and a year of prosperity. Most importantly it was a year of intense learning. Together John and I spent hours upon hours reading, studying and learning about Jesus Christ, His character, and requirements for us. I believe 2016 was an important year of growth for many members of our family.
I have no idea what 2017 will bring. There will definitely be another move and there may be another job change. Ruth will leave for a mission. Kate will graduate and move away for college. Things will continue to change. My prayer for 2017 is that we continue to learn and grow in light and knowledge.
