General Conference

I love General Conference. I like the instruction from the prophets and apostles. When conference ends I feel like I can be a better person. I have found a way to keep that resolve and remember what is said. I listen to conference each week when I wash the floors and often Sunday mornings when I prepare food. Of course I do not hear all four sessions every week, but I go through the talks again and again over the six months between conference sessions and I learn more and more. It is like reading the Book of Mormon through many times. I never think, "I am bored. I have read this before." I always feel like there is more to be learned and understood. I feel that way each time I listen to a conference talk. While I am not perfect at keeping their counsel, I at least know what it is I am told to be doing.

In fact, I listened to Elder Hollands April 2007 talk many times. Today I was feeling angry with Kate because she had lost a library book and her closet was such a mess, that it was hard to look through. I was about to say, "You kids are such slobs when I remembered Elder Holland's counsel not to criticize your children." So I didn't say that and I felt much better and found the book only a few moments later in another room. I brought the book to Kate and she was very grateful that I had found it for her. I am very grateful that I remembered that counsel when I especially needed it so that my daughter did not feel demeaned.

Girls, Women, and Brains

This is what I heard from my older kids a few nights back.

Ruth says to Johnny, "I am telling. You are in trouble. When mom hears this you are going to be grounded from the computer for a month!" Ruth turns and says to Kate, "Johnny said that girls aren't smart!! I am telling Mom."

Kate said,"Oh he will be in trouble. Mom is a GIRL!!"

Ruth said, "No, mom is a woman."

Kate responded, "Well a woman is a kind of a girl, so Johnny said that Mom is not smart."

I never got told this personally, but I was there listening and it was fun.

Food

There is hardly anything I can make that everyone in my family will like. This began when Johnny was old enough to express dissatisfaction with food, so I don't think that it is just a big family problem. It seems that once you get five people together (even being born and raised on the same food) they cannot agree on what is good to eat. Johnny likes cream of broccoli soup as do Ruth and Adam, Dad, and I. But Kate does not. Kate likes hot dogs, but Ruth and Adam and Dad do not. Ruth likes her spaghetti plain with only parmesean cheese. Kate, Johnny, and Mom need sauce, and Dad and Adam would be happy without spaghetti altogether. Mom and Dad like tacos, but the children will not even try the different parts put together. As for pizza, Mom likes vegetable pizza; Dad likes meat pizza; Kate likes only pepperoni pizza; Ruth does not like pizza, and Johnny and Adam only like plain pizza. So we can't even order a half and half pizza. The girls like salad, but the boys do not. The kids will eat tomatoes soup, but Dad absolutely refuses to eat that. Everyone likes homemade macaroni and cheese except Mom. You would think that a meat and potatoes dinner would go well, but there is always some one who won't eat the meat or the potatoes or both. Now it would be nice if these were consistent tastes. But we have found that we all change our minds on what we like to eat, so just because Dad liked Mexican rice last year he may find it intolerable this year. Or just because Johnny likes steak today he will not be able to tolerate it again for another 5 months. That is the case for all of us. So we are stuck. There is no dinner that all of us Robertson's like to eat together. Oh and we must forget that every night at dinner Ruth asks how much of the vegetable does she have to eat. Adam throws the vegetable off his plate saying, "My hate this one!!" Johnny and Kate quietly sneak away before Mom has noticed that they have not eaten any vegetables, and Dad just never remembers to serve himself a vegetable.

There is one more note I have to mention that seems to go with children and food. If you make something only for yourself and tell the kids they will not like it so they cannot have it they will be sure to love it and it becomes their favorite food. One other good trick is to tell them that they are eating something disgusting. For example the kids will eat stuffed squash if we put faces on our squash and tell them that they are being served monkey brains they will eat it. But they will never eat stuffed squashed. They will octopus, though. That is unless you tell them it is calamari. Octopus is good, and calamari is disgusting!!!!

Memory

This morning is John's birthday and all the kids got up with the purpose of doing something for their dad. They got out paper and crayons to make pictures and cards, and they brought him breakfast in bed. It has been such a peaceful happy morning and it reminded me of being four. I woke up one morning and my mother spoke very softly to me, told me it was thanksgiving and set me in front of the TV with a bowl of grapes. I felt as happy and as peaceful then as I do this morning. I think that parents speaking softly and children doing things for others makes such a happy peaceful home. I need to remember that soft voice and use it more, because one of my first and happiest memories was a few soft words from my mother.

Fall

I love Wichita in the fall. The weather is beautiful, the colors are beautiful. The heavy summer heat has left us with warm, breezy happy days. There is also a feeling of festivity that seems to be catching with fairs, and pumpkin farms and Halloween welcoming in the winter holidays. It is not cold and it is not hot so all of these things are just delightfully comfortable. The nights are still somewhat warm. It is very pleasant to be out after dark and enjoy the orange harvest moon and the shadows it casts.

I aways find that I like to cook this time a year. Baked goods are yummy again with the weather more mild. Everyone is excited to have pumpkin and apple treats again and we all love those wonderful spice smells that baking brings into the house.

Funny Conversation

Johnny: Kate do you want to play risk with me?

Kate: No, Johnny. I just don't feel like killing anyone today.

Good Kids

This morning I was thinking how blessed I am with such good kids, and how I know that they aren't good because of me. They are just good because of who they are and their little choices they make everyday. At that moment, Ruth came crying to me because Kate called her big foot. Ruth apparently had argued that there are no girl big foots and Kate said there were because Ruth's feet are way to big for her tiny body. Well, I don't think I was wrong about my kids. They are good; they are just not perfect
