Getting Susan: A Journey of Faith

Our dear little Susan Scarlett was born late Thursday night. This is the story of how we got her.

Before Arwen was born nearly two years ago, I knew that there was one more child that needed to come to our family. After Arwen came, my body was pretty weak. I had a harder time pushing her out and it took me months to heal. Knowing that I was supposed to have another child, I continued to take prenatal vitamins and began exercising regularly to strengthen my muscles. I am horrible with exercising, but knowing that I was doing it for something more important than myself, helped me to continue. After a few months of regular exercise the hip and leg problems that I had after carrying and delivering Arwen healed. Around that time, John lost his job.

In the months that followed, I knew I was getting older, that conceiving and carrying a baby would undoubtedly be harder, and with John out of work with no serious prospects, I found myself praying about whether or not we should even be considering another baby. The answer remained the same.

I wanted a June baby. We have birthdays throughout the year and I wanted to fill in our little May/June birthday gap. A little silly, I know. However, to get a June baby that meant conceiving the baby in September. September 1, 2013 came and John still did not have a job. On September 15th, John was hired at Mycore and my period started. We prayed and asked if it was time. The answer was yes. We quit preventing pregnancy right away. On Oct 17th, I had a positive pregnancy test.

At the time, we did not have health insurance. We could apply for it in November, but with Christmas coming, we really didn't want that extra money taken out of every paycheck and decided to wait until January to get insurance. I was not sure what the insurance would cover once we did get it, and I didn't feel comfortable contacting my OB from the last two births.

In December. I began looking into the possibility of a homebirth.  Instead of being $7,000 to $8,000 it was $3,000. I contacted a couple of midwives that delivered in our area. The first that got back to me was BirthWise Midwives. I hesitantly made an appointment for Dec 30th. As the time arrived for the appointment and we were in the process of getting health insurance, I wondered if I had made a mistake and if I should just go with the traditional hospital birth. Knowing how John's family would react to a homebirth, I almost cancelled the appointment, but it felt wrong-- very wrong.

For the first time, John and I prayed about what to do together. We knew that going ahead with the homebrth was the right choice. I went to my Dec 30th appointment and met Heather. The whole experience was so different from any OB appointment I had had with my 9 previous pregnancies. Instead of the 15 minutes hurry you  in and out of the doctor's office, Heather spent 45 minutes getting to know me, my health, and my previous birth experiences.

The following month, Heather talked to me about nutrition. I didn't like it, but she had me write down what I ate and then talked to me about how to get more protein. I had been extremely tired. I thought that it was just my age combined with having 9 other children. I took Heather's advice and found that my energy levels improved significantly. An OB would have never taken the time to help improve my energy levels through nutrition. In the past, if I even bothered to complain about fatigue or anything, all the different OB's I had would shrug it off and tell me that it was par for the course. At this point, I wondered why I hadn't gone to a midwife before.

By the end of March, John had lost his job, we had lost health insurance, we had paid for the homebirth with the tax return. Mid-April, I applied for medicaid, but as of today, I have not yet received my medicaid card. If we had not gone ahead with the homebirth, we may very well have been slapped with a $7,000 hospital bill, the stress trying to get that fixed, and I would not yet be released from the hospital.

Two weeks ago, I had a positive strep B test. If I was having a hospital birth, they would not release me until 48 hours after the baby was born, making for an even larger hospital bill.

Having a positive strep B test changed the homebirth plan a bit. Midwives can administer IV's and give IV antibiotics in your home. Because I have a history of laboring quickly, we decided it would be best to plan a homebirth induction. This meant that when my cervix was soft and ready and the baby was low enough, Heather would come in, give me an IV and then come back a little later to break my water. We planned this for Thursday night.

Heather came over just after 6pm. She checked me and stripped my membranes. I was 5cm to 6cm dilated. By 6:45, I had received the standard dose of IV antibiotics. Heather went home to take care of her family, and John and I got our kids fed and sent to bed.

Heather returned around 9:30. We had our little kids in bed, though not quite asleep. Heather checked me again and I was a good 6cm dilated. At 9:45, she pushed the baby down a little more and broke my water. I sat on the toilet as a lot of fluid dripped from me. Then I  took a short bath and got in bed with a TV show while I waited for contractions to start. Contractions started at 10:30.

Between 10:30 and 10:50, I had 4 mild contractions. At 10:52, I had a much harder contraction. Another harder contraction came at 10:54. At 10:56, I moved back to the toilet, another gush of fluid came, so John got Heather to check the baby's heart rate. Heather told me that she would need to check the baby every 25 minutes. I told her that I did not think the baby would be that much longer. After another contraction, I moved to the bath tub. The cool water helped me to deal with the pain. My contractions stayed about 1 to 2 minutes apart and were quite painful. I had probably 3 to 5 more contractions when I knew it was time to push. I held my hand down over my bottom. I could feel the baby's head there, though it had not crowned yet. At first, I felt scared and nervous to push, but I knew that bearing down and pushing was the only way to stop the pain. I was up on my knees in a tub full of cool water with my head resting on a towel on the side of the tub. I made the choice to push. I pushed through, I think 3 contractions, when the head came out. I asked Heather if she could just pull the baby out at that point. She said no and told me to wait for one more contraction. I had Susan's head in my hand and I could feel her face. John touched her head, and then that contraction started. I gave one good push and the shoulders came out. I grabbed the shoulders and pulled Susan out of me and out of the water. Heather handed me a towel to wrap her in. Susan started crying and breathing without any suction or anything. She was a nice red color and looked beautiful and healthy. I relaxed and held Susan to my chest. John came in closer and stroked her. After a few more minutes, I asked what time she was born-- 11:29pm. I basically delivered her myself with my own hands.

John and I took some time just holding and stroking and welcoming Susan to our family. The nurse, Melanie who had arrived around the time I was pushing, got our 4 oldest kids. They came in surrounded the bathtub. We let them stroke Susan and welcome her to the family. I loved having my older kids there to see their baby sister just after she entered the world.

After a few minutes we sent the kids out and delivered the placenta. John took Susan and I showered and got into bed. We didn't cut the cord until John, Susan, and I were in bed together.

Melanie examined Susan and got her foot prints. Heather and Melanie cleaned everything up and left us. I loved having a homebirth.

Because I pushed Susan kneeling, I did not tear. I am not swollen. I have had the least bloody delivery and cleanest 2 days after birth ever. I feel good. Susan is healthy. I never had to leave home. John is not exhausted from hauling kids back and forth to the hospital. John and I are not stressed from having the kids play on the hospital floor and push buttons they should not push. The kids have had a lot of time holding and welcoming their little sister. Life is good and we are very grateful that Heavenly Father saw fit to send Susan to our family.

This Week at Our House # 24

  1. John had a really great Father's Day celebrated completely by our children. They showered him with gifts, cards, breakfast in bed, a good morning milkshake. They made dinner. They cleaned the house. I was allowed to rest and John still had a really great day.
  2. I am 39 weeks pregnant now and contractions are coming harder and more frequently, though not regularly. I am hoping to meet little Susan any time in the next week and a half. I am tired and big and uncomfortable, but I feel better because I know I am at the end.
  3. Ruth has been a very big help to me. She does laundry, dishes, cleans bathrooms, sweeps, scrubs floors, and takes care of the little kids. She makes everyday easier for me.
  4. Kate and Ruth basically share a bathroom with each other. Pretty much everyone else uses the other 2 bathrooms, but Ruth and Kate fight over their bathroom everyday. Kate will come to me complaining that she needed to use the bathroom when Ruth was using it. Ruth complains that Kate showers just as she was going to shower. Finally, I was like, "Do you want me to ground you from the bathroom?", "Do you want me to give you a schedule and you can only use the bathroom during your scheduled time?" It's just silly. 2 people should be able to share one bathroom without a war.
  5. Johnny has been searching the scriptures and taking notes on what he has been learning. He is such a mature 12 year old. One of the cooler young men in our ward makes fun of Johnny all the time. Johnny just agrees with the mean things the kid says and continues to be himself. I definitely did not have that kind of maturity until I was much older.
  6. Adam sucked his finger and picked up the living room. As long as he plans to suck his finger, I plan to give him that one very hard chore. In some sense, we are at a truce.
  7. Rachel is tired of school! She hates getting up and going, she hates coming home and doing homework, and she hates that I am still saying, "Go to bed. It's a school night." She's almost done though, and we will never do year round school again!
  8. Anya loves to read and reads just because she wants to every single day. I love that kind of a kid, especially at 6! I never have to say, "Go and read for 20 minutes!" That's just a beautiful thing!
  9. Joseph had this funny conversation with Adam:  Joseph: Where did we get those scissors? Adam: Bought um Joseph: Bottom of where?
  10. Josh told me, "I love you." I told Josh to go to bed again. Josh said, "No, Mom, you said the wrong thing. I said I love you."
  11. Arwen is going to have a hard time when Susan is born. She gets very upset whenever anyone else sits on my lap.
  12. Susan has slowed down a bunch. I don't think she has much room left to kick anymore. I am looking forward to meeting her.

Father's Day

John is just the greatest dad, ever!! He spends a little bit of individual time with each of our children about every other day. He did this when he was employed too. He spends about 30 minutes to an hour a day instructing the kids in gospel topics. He works to make sure the younger children are learning the Bible and Book of Mormon stories, and he is always talking to the older kids about issues of our day verses what the modern day prophets and scriptures say about it. He will gather the little kids around him, tell them he is going to tell them a story and then tell them a story from the scriptures. John deserves to be honored as a Father in Zion. My 10 children are very blessed to have him as their dad.

This Week at Our House #23

  1. No job notices, though John is applying for about 5 jobs a week. There is less stress now that John is getting unemployment. That is slowly starting to accumulate and we should be able to make our June and July bills.
  2. I had a busy week. On Tuesday, I ran a whole bunch of errands. John came to help me with the little kids. That made the trip easier. On Wednesday, I had a meeting at the Capitol Building for a Marriage Coalition and then had to run over to Layton for my midwife appointment. On Thursday, I volunteered in Rachel's classroom and then we did a picnic dinner at the splash pad for the kids.  Friday was a big clean the house day. I made the 4 oldest kids clean one bathroom together. I am astonished on how much complaining I got from that. Saturday was my wedding anniversary.
  3. Ruth relaxed all week except when I made her do a few chores. She only left the house Saturday morning for stake young women's camp prep. She now needs to get serious about getting her summer health and fitness class in and finding a job.
  4. Kate did about the same as Ruth, only she complained more when I asked her to do chores. This week, I need to get her on a good schedule. Ruth and Kate did arrive home from Wyoming pretty late on Monday and Kate had developed a big case of hives so I was pretty easy on them.
  5. Johnny and Kate built a pretty awesome lego space ship for a lego contest. They did a really good and are among the top 20 highest rated ships.
  6. Adam has been sucking his finger. He did that as a toddler and quit at 5. He has taken that up again. To convince him to stop, I have been making him clean the living room every time I see his finger in his mouth. I am not sure if it is working, but our house has been nice and clean. It's a good excuse for constant slave labor :).
  7. Rachel went running with John. She has the most stamina of all of our kids and she is good and fast too. The only thing we found is that if Rachel does not want to run, she absolutely will not.
  8. Anya has been setting up and playing with her toys a lot. Arwen has particularly enjoyed having Anya to play toys with her.
  9. Joseph has been pretty aloof. I have been tired and busy and he has been his own busy. I need to make sure I get some real time in with him this week. He hasn't destroyed anything at all and that is definitely progress.
  10. After seeing Kate and Johnny's lego ships, Josh has been building space ships with his big wooden blocks. He wakes up before the rest of the family, comes downstairs and begins block construction.
  11. Arwen sets the table with dishes whenever she wants a meal.
  12. I am 38 weeks along today. I am also having contractions all the time, but nothing regular. This is the part of the pregnancy that I hate the most-- always. Often I have compared myself to "Mayzie the Lazy Bird Hatching an Egg"..."I'm tired, and I'm bored and there are kinks in my legs". This time has been harder than past pregnancies as I have been dizzy, extra tired, and faint a lot. But I can do this. Just 2 more weeks and then I get to meet our dear little Susan.

17 Years

John and I were married Saturday, June 7, 1997. Yesterday was our 17th wedding anniversary! Because of our sweet friends showering with gifts last week, we were able to get a nice steak dinner out and catch a movie. I feel like 17 years is a lot. It's like we are entering our senior year in high school or something.

The last three years have been a bit rough for us both financially and with all of John's job problems. It has a been a challenge to try and stay close and not criticize each other. I feel like this has been the first long term challenge that we have had to our marriage that has made it easier to give in to the temptation to argue and criticize. I am learning how much choice goes into a good marriage. There is no magic. We have to make the choice to be kind and put aside negative emotions. In fact, the choice goes a bit farther. If we are careful to ward off the negative emotions, we are building a stronger marriage and coming closer. Tough times can bring you closer or drive you apart. Some days being close is easy. Other days, we just feel impatient enough in our situation that it is hard to separate that from how we treat each other. That doesn't change that how we treat each other is our choice. I choose John and I know John chooses me. We may be sometime longer struggling to find a good job for John and to pay our bills, but it is better to struggle together. Marriage is a beautiful thing!

The Final Scene in It's Wonderful Life

Yesterday in the evening, we received a friendly knock at our door. My kids answered quickly. I was expecting a friend of mine to come and pick up 3 kittens for her farm. It was this friend and 2 of our other friends with tons and tons of stuff for our family to help during this time of unemployment and the birth of our new little baby. My friends secretively gathered a lot of our Facebook friends and friends who know our family or just John or just me and gathered all of these needful and nice things. Everyone donated items-- money, gift cards and many people wrote sweet and kind notes to go along with it all. There were beautiful homemade items and nice store bought items. We were given baby clothes, clothes for me, gift cards for clothes, gift cards for a dinner and movie date, a costco gift card, a hair cut gift card, and more. We were also given new towels, baby bath supplies, lotions, soaps, freezer meals, tons of diapers and wipes, essential oils, gifts for the kids, and cash! My 3 dear friends stayed and chatted and I opened all of the gifts and we had a baby shower of sorts. I am so very grateful for the love that was showered on our family. My kids acted and felt like it was Christmas. I am touched and I am reminded that Zion will come again. I can see the gathering as we learn the doctrine of Jesus Christ and stand together, and I can see the gathering in the service and love given. My heart is happy. I know this was a tender mercy. I am so blessed to have so many wonderful people love and care for us. I hope I can do this for other people in the future.

This Week at Our House # 22

  1. John made dinner a lot to help me as it gets harder and harder for me to move around.
  2. School ended for Ruth and all of the Legacy Prep kids. That has been such a relief because I can now sleep in an extra hour in the morning. I have been and will be walking Rachel to school in the morning to get in a little exercise. I felt pretty awful all week and when I had my midwife appointment my blood pressure was high for me. I will be seeing her again this week and getting that checked.
  3. Ruth finished her sophmore year and had high honors all year!! Giving her a 3.96 gpa for the year. I am so proud of her. I know she worked hard for grades.
  4. Kate got to got to Lagoon with all the other junior high kids on Thursday. She came back sunburned and happy. Kate made honor roll with one B the first quarter and a 4.0 all the other 3 quarters giving her an accumulative gpa of 3.98. Again, I am a proud mom.
  5. Johnny got to go to Lagoon too. He came back happy and sunburned and then got the sickness going around our house the next day. Johnny made high honor roll all 4 quarters with an accumulative gpa of 3.95 for the 8th grade. He also got all honors marks for his citizen ship. I am especially proud of Johnny because he skipped two grades and had all of his courses with kids that much older than him. Johnny was mature, all of his teachers thought he belonged where he was socially, behaviorally, and academically, and he made good friends.
  6. Adam got straight A's to end the school year with and only deviated from that with one B+ third quarter. He started Legacy Prep frustrated and behind his classmates because Legacy Prep teaches a year ahead of the public schools. He ended the year as the top student in his class for math and on level for reading. I am very proud of Adam too.
  7. Rachel went back to school and is in until July 3. I hate that as does Rachel now too. She is suffering having to do homework when everyone else has free time.
  8. Anya got straight A's all school year. She had her end of the year kindergarten concert to show the parents all that they learned. They had so many awesome things memorized including things about the Founding Fathers. They also danced and had tons of art ans cute songs. I just love Legacy Prep. I will be sad if we have to move and leave this awesome school. And yes, I am proud of Anya too. She started out school not knowing much more than her alphabet and now she can read.
  9. Joseph had a pretty good week without much destruction. I think he tried to take the bathroom fan out of the ceiling in the downstairs bathroom, sigh. He is too curious!!
  10. Josh is still potty training, but it is coming along. If I do not take his bedtime diaper off first thing in the morning, he will be sure to take the opportunity to poop in it. He is the oldest of all of my kids to still be having potty trouble. Still, it is coming and his diaper is just off all day and has been for months.
  11. Arwen was quite sick with a high fever most of the week.
  12. I am officially 37 weeks along. I cannot wait to meet this little baby. She seems strong as she kicks me pretty hard.
